Siena means Palio to the majority!

August in Siena is not the best time of the year to come to this marvel of Tuscany to get married: a Wedding in Tuscany is an amazing experience, but the temperature in mid August might not be the best to celebrate it and you’d rather come to Siena to live the unique experience of the Palio. This is indeed the time of the year when Siena runs its Palio. The Palio di Siena  is run twice a year: on July 2nd (palio di Provenzano) and on August 16th (Palio dell’Assunta). 10 contradas (ancient areas in which the city is split) run it. Horses are assigned by a drawing occurring on June 29th and August 13th for the following respective races. This draw is called “la Tratta” and it is the first of a 4 days event that ends with the day of the Palio. In these 4 days 6 trial are run during the day and in these the chosen rider gets to know the horse. The last trial is held on the morning of the Palio.
The Palio itself is such a feast for the Senesi (people from Siena) and does not end with the three loops run by the horses in Piazza del Campo, it goes on till night and the following weeks when the won Palio (every Palio has it’s own prize created explicitly for that race by a new artist every year, and called Drappellone) is celebrated and guarded accurately for ever after in the winning contrada museum.
Accessing Piazza del Campo on the day of the Palio is very difficult and it requires you to stay under the sun from the early morning till sunset.. the sun of Tuscany in August… The flavour of the real Palio is the inner soul of Siena and its people!!!

talamone2“Pre-historic hunters who lived in the Uccellina caves liked it and the Etruscans and Romans liked it enough to turn it into a major sea-port and build imposing villas with swimming pools.  Medieval Lords liked it too as did the Siennese who fortified the town and the Spanish who further strengthened its defences.”

It has lost nothing of its appeal today; people remain enchanted by its  untamed rocky shoreline and the endless blue of the sea not to mention the  the green of its fields and Mediterranean brush  and the fierceness of  the warm  prevailing wind.”talamone 1

Talamone:

Talamone is a town in the Tuscan Maremma, it easily reached from Via Aurelia, and is about 25 km from Grosseto and 10 from Orbetello.

The village lies on a rocky promontory, which lies on the southern border of the Maremma nature reserve, in a dominant position along the whole stretch of coast arriving at Mount Argentario.

Among the monuments of interest is the fortress which stands out from the promontory, overlooking the entire village and along the coastal stretch.

The local beach of Talamone has become a very popular area to practice the sport of Kitesurfing. You can also visit the Lagoon Aquarium, which consists of ten tanks. In 2008 it was one of the sets used for the movie 007 – Quantum of Solace.

capalbio 4Capalbio is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Grosseto – Southern coast of Tuscany. Capalbio is  located about 150 km south-west of Florence, 210 km south of Pisa and about 45 km southeast of Grosseto.

capalbio1

History

The name derives probably from the Latin Caput Album or Campus Albus (White Cape or Field, respectively), due to the white alabaster stone dug in the area.

Capalbio is known for the first time in 805 AD, when it was donated to the Abbey of the Tre Fontane, near Rome, by Charlemagne. The possession was confirmed in 1161 by Pope Alexander III. Later it was under the Aldobrandeschi family, who were followed by Orvieto, the Republic of Siena and the Orsini, who built the Castle.

Conquered by the Spaniards in 1555. it was assignecapalbio3d to Cosimo I de’ Medici as part of his new Grand Duchy of Tuscany. The city subsequently decayed and the area depopulated due to the presence of malaria.

It became part of the Kingdom of Italy in 1860, becoming an independent comune in 1960. Capalbio is also the place where Buffalo Bill suffered his first defeat.

The town is completely enclosed within a double set of Senese walls, along which extensive stretches of the suggestive patrol bays can still be walked. Capalbio has a medieval town plan, with narrow, curved streets climbing to the top of the hill dominated by the Rocca Aldobrandesca. The double-bay Porta Senese, which is crowned by a tower, is the gateway to the historic centre.

A marbie inscription on the gate commemorates the 1416 restoration of the walls by the Sienese. The road continues past the so-called Arco Santo (Holy Arch), capped by a marble bust of the Emperor Hadrian, and climbs to the Church of St. Nicholas, perhaps dating to the 12th century, standing at the foot of the rocca. The simple facade has an ogival portal topped by an inscription commemorating the enlargement and restoration of the church in 1466.

The interior is a single-bay structure with a rectangular apse and side chapels. The Romanesque capitals with animal and plant motifs and several frescoes of the 15th and 16th century Umbrian school are quite interesting.

Over the centuries Capalbio’s Rocca has undergone continuous modifications which have gradually transformed it into a patrician residence.  A square tower with an inclined base rises directly in front of the Church of St. Nicholas. The Collacchioni Palace, built over the old structures of the castle in the early decades of this century, leans against the tower’s north side.

In the palace several rooms complete with their original furnishings can be visited. Among these is the so called Sala Puccini, which preserves an Austrian piano from 1823 which the famous composer himself played. Outside the walls is the small Oratory of Providence.

Getting married in the magic castle of Capalbio is a unique experience which you will cherish for your lifetime

Wedding in Orbetello is a dream that comes true! This is the perfect scenography for your special day!

Orbetello:

Orbetello is a town and commune in the province of Grosseto (Tuscany), Italy. It is located c. 35 km south of Grosseto, on the eponymous lagoon, which is home to an important Natural Reserve.

orbetello4

History:

Orbetello was an ancient Etruscan settlement, which in 280 BC passed under the control of the Romans, who had founded their colony of Cosa (near the modern Ansedonia).

In the Middle Ages it was a possession of the Aldobrandeschi family, who held it until the 14th century, when it was acquired by the city of Orvieto. After several struggles with the Orsini of Pitigliano and Orvieto, in the following centuries Orbetello was captured by the Sienese Republic. In the mid-16th century it was part of the Spanish puppet State of Presides, becoming its capital. Later it was under the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and, from the late 19th century, the newly unified Kingdom of Italy.

In 1927-1933, Italo Balbo’s “air cruises” started from Orbetello’s lagoon.

Main sights:

• The city walls (5th century BC).

• Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, built over an Etruscan-Roman temple and restructured in 1375 along Tuscan-Gothic lines. Preceded by a step, it houses some notable 15th century frescoes.

• The Spanish Forte delle Saline, in the frazione of Albinia.

• Remains of the Roman city of Cosa in the frazione of Ansedonia.

• Ruins of the Monastery of Sant’Angelo.

The Cathedral of Orbetello :

The Cathedral is placed in Piazza della Repubblica (Square of the Republic), in the very heart of the urban centre surrounded by the ancient Etruscan walls that are still visible.

The Cathedral, that is the ancient Church entitled to Saint Mary’s Assumption, was built on a pre-existing building at the end of XIV century.

It was restored during the Spanish domination.

From the ancient building it is still possible to admire the Gothic, travertine-made, facade showing a fine portal where is portrayed the ensign of Orbetello and a rose-window surmounted by a hole hosting the chest of the Blessing God.

The interior of the Cathedral is on three aisles divided by pillars.
